Help 200 San Francisco Students to Receive Laptops & Tutoring!

With nearly 3,000 San Francisco students experiencing homelessness and many more facing economic hardship, local nonprofit Urban Angels San Francisco (UASF) is launching a new initiative to close the education gap for children living at or below the poverty level in the City. The Spring 2025 “Rise Up SF” Campaign, which kicked off on March 1, aims to equip 200 underserved students with the technology and tutoring they need to succeed.

“When students lack access to technology and academic support, their future opportunities shrink,” says Nelson Barry, UASF founder. “This initiative is about breaking cycles of poverty, preventing homelessness, and giving every child in San Francisco a chance to succeed.”

Urban Angels SF is partnering with local shelters, schools, and other local groups to connect families with these resources.

“Through this initiative, these students will receive a new Chromebook, noise-canceling headphones with a microphone, and access to year-round one-on-one tutoring in math or reading at no cost to the child,” says Jocelyn Pittel, a UASF board member.

Urban Angels SF trusts that San Franciscans will support children and contribute with donations to complete the funds needed for this tutoring initiative.

Above, David is a second grader in SFUSD, living in a shelter with his parents in San Francisco’s Mission District. Despite his dreams of becoming a veterinarian, he’s already falling behind in reading. Due to severe school budget cuts, David's school doesn’t have the resources to provide the support he needs.

Without intervention, students like David are at risk of falling further behind—limiting their future opportunities.

You Can Change That.

Research proves that one-on-one, high-impact tutoring is one of the most effective ways to help struggling students succeed. That’s why Urban Angels SF is stepping up with our Rise Up SF! campaign to provide 200 children with:

✅ Chromebooks & headphones for learning access
✅ Personalized tutoring in reading or math (twice a week)
✅ Academic support that changes lives

29 students have already started tutoring
